The Orphan of Pimlico, A Moral Tale of Belgravian Life by Miss M.T. Wigglesworth And other Sketches, Fragments & Drawings by William Makepeace Thacker

The Orphan of Pimlico, A Moral Tale of Belgravian Life by Miss M.T. Wigglesworth And other Sketches, Fragments & Drawings by William Makepeace Thackeray. London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1876. Small folio. AEG. English journalist, novelist, famous for his novel VANITY FAIR (1847-48), a tale of two middle-class London families. Most of Thackeray's major novels were published as monthly serials. Thackeray studied in a satirical and moralistic light upper- and middle-class English life - he was once seen as the equal of his contemporary Dickens, or even as his superior. "This I set as a positive truth. A woman with fair opportunities, and without a positive hump, may marry whom she likes." (from Vanity Fair) Condition statement: This book is an excellent candidate for breaking. The front and rear boards are detached but present. Only a few scraps of the spine remain. Most of the pages are disbound. Dampstain on upper edge of title page, and v, not affecting text. Similar dampstain on last two pages, in this case affecting one of the vignettes on the next to last page. Some foxing.
