Hubin, Allen J.:
CRIME FICTION, 1749-1980: A COMPREHENSIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY WITH CRIME FICTION, 1981-1985 SUPPLEMENT (TWO VOLUMES)
New York: Garland, 1984, 1988. First edition. 712 and 260 pages.
Crime fiction, for the purpose of this bibliography, is defined very broadly as fiction intended for adult readers, in which crime or the threat of crime is a major plot element. Thus included are mystery, detective, suspense, thriller, gothic, police and spy fiction.
The main both of this bibliography comprises the author index, to which all other sections refer. Here all authors identified with crime fiction published through the end of 1980 (1985 with supplement) are arranged in alphabetical order. Books are listed alphabetically under the byline under which they were first published. Cross-referencing is provided to the author's real name, where different from the crime fiction byline, and to any other pseudonyms use for crime fiction.
The headnotes to byline entries provide author birth and death dates, where known. They also identity series characters and provide a means to show in which of the listed books the characters appear. When all appearances of a character are believed identified, the notation so indicates; when unidentified appearances may exist, the headnote indicates this uncertainty. (Also includes settings, which reference books are cited, biographical information)
