Copland, Aaron:
OUR NEW MUSIC: LEADING COMPOSERS IN EUROPE AND AMERICA
New York: Whittlesey House, 1941. First edition.
Considered by many the greatest American composer of the 20th century, Copland dedicated himself early on in his composing career to seeking and defining a distinctly American sound. His list of works includes ballets, orchestral compositions, film scores, and choral works.
His most popular and best known music includes 'Appalachian Spring', 'Rodeo', and 'Billy the Kid'. Most everyone today is at least familiar with excerpts from Copland's 'Fanfare for the Common Man' due to its wide use in conjunction with theme music for the Olympics, and numerous other commercial applications.
In addition to composing, he was also skilled as a conductor and there are many fine recordings with Copland conducting his own music still available. His lifelong friend Leonard Bernstein also conducted many excellent recorded performances of his work. From www.aaroncopland.com
Our New Music aims specifically to help to listener understand the music of the era.

Curry, Jack:
WOODSTOCK: THE SUMMER OF OUR LIVES
New York: Weidenfeld, 1989. First edition.
From Publishers Weekly
Despite teetering on the brink of disaster throughout the weekend--food ran short, performers failed to show, toilet facilities and medical care were inadequate--the Woodstock Music and Art Fair: An Aquarian Exposition (the festival's full title) has become a positive symbol of late '60s counterculture. Curry, entertainment editor for USA Today , examines the significance of Woodstock by tracing the experiences and perceptions of 19 individuals associated with the event: organizers, local residents, entertainers and attendees. He explores how each became involved with Woodstock, follows their actions during the festival and shows how their lives have been affected by their participation. Although Curry supplements his protagonists' recollections with a fair amount of researched information and gently corrects obvious memory lapses, he generally allows the myths of Woodstock to breathe on. In so doing, he demonstrates an axiom of historical study: that actual events are not nearly as important as the way in which they are remembered. Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
Setting out "to recapture the vibrancy of the Woodstock Festival by repopulating it in microcosm," author Curry ( USA Today's entertainment editor) pulls together the stories of a handful of participants at the counterculture's 1969 tour de force. Although the first hundred pages or so are overly preoccupied with giving background information on those interviewed, the pace really picks up when actual memories are shared and, in the last pages, we get a glimpse of where these people are now. Although most of Curry's memory-lane contributors were "ordinary" people who either went to Woodstock, worked there, or lived in the environs, some of the more interesting contributions come from musicians who performed there (e.g., Country Joe McDonald, John Sebastian, "Jocko" Marcellino). An enjoyable remember-when for those who grew up in the era.

Shapiro, Nat and Bruce Pollock (editors):
POPULAR MUSIC, 1920-1979 A REVISED CUMULATION (IN THREE VOLUMES) AN ANNOTATED INDEX OF OVER 18,000 AMERICAN POPULAR SONGS, CUMULATING AMD UPDATING EIGHT VOLUMES OF POPULAR MUSIC AND INCLUDING INTRODUCTORY ESSAYS, LYRICISTS AND COMPOSERS INDEX, IMPORTANT PERFORMANCES INDEX, AWARDS INDEX, AND LIST OF PUBLISHERS.
Detroit, MI: Gale Research, 1985. First edition. 2827 pages.
From Library Journal
Popular Music has long been the most comprehensive ready reference guide to the "significant popular songs of our time." First published in six volumes by Adrian Press (1964-73), it covered important songs copyrighted between 1920 and 1969. In 1984 Gale reissued the set, adding two new volumes to bring coverage up through 1979. Gale's new three-volume cumulation is similar to the eight-volume set but much easier to use. The 18,142 songs listed are the same, as is the basic information given: composer, lyricist, publisher, performer(s) who made the song famous, and copyright data. Gone, however, is the awkward chronological arrangement in favor of a single alphabetical by song title listing. Eight separate title indexes are replaced by one, and publisher addresses are updated. Added is a much needed index to composers and lyricists and an "important performances index."

Dory Previn:
BOG-TROTTER: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY WITH LYRICS
Garden City; Doubleday, 1980. First Edition.
"I have been an actress, model, and chorus girl," Dory Previn writes. "I've worked at odd jobs-- secretary, salesgirl, accounting in a filling station (I have no aptitude for numbers), waitress, any- thing to keep me going while I pursued my writing. Then once in California I was a junior writer at MGM, a writer of cartoons for UPA studios, free-lance, half-hours for TV, and ten title songs for films, for which I've received three Academy Award nominations. My biggest hobby is my writing--my vocation is also my avocation.
Bog-Trotter, as emotionally charged as the circumstances it reveals, describes the songwriter's entrée into the film and music world, and the frightening schizophrenia that accompanied her rose to success.
